Christening the Piece at Lamoni

IMG_6463

The Lamoni Civil War Days are long past and most of us are recovering from Thanksgiving and making ready for more holidays and family gatherings.  I have been looking through photos and video from the past summer and came across something I think most of you will enjoy.

While I was at Lamoni I wandered through the Federal and Confederate camps.  Horses stood in the shade of trees, calm after a busy day.  Campfires crackled and smoke floated toward the heavens.  Eventually, Saturday evening, I ended up in the camp of Battery C, 3rd Iowa Light Artillery Regiment.  This Federal artillery group offered me a cool drink and even a piece of watermelon – perfect refreshments after a hot day.

Then a commotion erupted in camp – it was time for the Christening of the Piece.  This is a ceremony that officially brings an artillery piece into service.  The ceremony was quite entertaining – CLICK HERE to watch this funny, unforgettable event.

And don’t be shy, leave comments below.
